Animatic 3: Tokyo Drift

I've redone the 'escape' part. The original would have been really difficult to animate, considering that most of the shots had all four characters, plus animated backgrounds, since the house is collapsing around them. In addition, a lot of the shots had confusing, gross-looking silhouettes, and that needed to be fixed.

The whole thing needed more 'zazz', so I reboarded the whole thing and added some split-screens. It actually contains more shots than the original version, but the shots are simpler and will be much, much easier to animate. Not to mention the backgrounds aren't as prominent, and, in a lot of the shots, I can replace them with those sort of stylized, 'whooshing' backgrounds that are fairly easy to execute. Ultimately, this new version of the sequence should save me at least a week of work.

Also, it just looks way cooler.

I've also cut in most of the Flash layouts I've completed so far:

It's also on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/31778778

Right now, the film runs at about seven minutes. Although it's an increase time-wise, it's actually a decrease work-wise, if that makes sense. Also, some of that added time comes from added holds and the opening title.

I plan to tighten the segment that occurs between when Malcolm lands on the couch and the following morning, so the final, FINAL film should be somewhat shorter.

  1. Hi Careen,

If you can't get the file(s) to upload tonight
bring 'em with you to class tomorrow and maybe you and I can take a look over in the studio after the scheduled folks have had their turns.

I'd love to get a look at the latest version.

    See you tomorrow.

  2. Looks great! Love the scene at 6:36 when Malcolm throws Darby.

So in terms of timing, you can afford to cut some shots down, but the problem is everything flows so perfectly that it's hard to decide which scenes need to be shortened or cut out.

Here are my suggestions. With the opening shot of the house, I think it should be longer to include the title. Also, at 2:57 is Malcolm wearing a belt? He looks too normal. You can leave him to look like that dancing Disney character in the shot before. Cutting out or down the looking back and forth scene from 5:00 to 5:10 would help. The robot dance from 3:53 to 4:03 is funny but not necessary. There is some extra dialogue you can afford to take out as well.

Great job so far! The biggest issue for you is deciding on the dialogue and what works best. Other than that, it seems like you're on track.

  3. Love the funny new ending!

I have a couple of minor notes:

    1. I assume the background will be filled in more? They are a bit barren now.

    2. I think it would be funny if the character (Darby?) kept screaming after 3:20

    3. The composition is a little off on 3:34- it would look better if you could show more of the character's head in the frame.

    4. Also, I'm not sure what's happening when the lump appears near Malcolm- perhaps because it's not animated yet?

It looks great! Sean's suggestions are good.
